Level 2 Digital Technology

Subject Description

Teacher in Charge: E. Trudeau.

In the Level 2 NCEA Digital Technology course, ākonga will advance their skills in creating digital outcomes with specific purposes by following established processes. Building upon their Level 1 knowledge, they will further explore and apply different design processes that are rooted in cultural traditions (tikanga). Through a cycle of testing, refining, and re-testing, ākonga will develop an iterative approach to their work, ensuring continuous improvement. Collaboration and feedback from peers and experts will play a central role, enabling ākonga to leverage diverse knowledge and perspectives to enhance their designs.

The course will delve deeper into the fundamental principles of digital technologies, with a particular focus on algorithms and computer science. Ākonga will gain a comprehensive understanding of how computers process information using algorithms and the inherent flexibility that enables them to solve complex problems. This knowledge will encourage ākonga to think innovatively, explore new possibilities, and push the boundaries of what can be achieved in digital technologies.

Moreover, the course emphasizes the social and cultural contexts of digital technologies. Ākonga will be encouraged to bring their unique backgrounds and experiences to the subject, while also considering the perspectives of others. They will learn about the ethical responsibility of creators to prioritize the well-being of users and protect digital resources. Taking an ao Māori lens, ākonga will critically examine their work, acknowledging the importance of usability and end-user experience in software design. They will recognize the impact of technology on society and explore ways to address social and cultural challenges through purposeful digital outcomes.

Overall, this Level 2 NCEA Digital Technology course aims to empower ākonga to create purposeful digital outcomes while fostering collaboration, innovation, and cultural sensitivity. By building on their Level 1 knowledge, ākonga will deepen their understanding of design processes, algorithms, and the social implications of digital technologies. They will develop critical thinking skills, creativity, and an awareness of the diverse perspectives that shape the digital world.
