Subject Description

Teacher in Charge: S. Pimm.

Te Reo Māori is the key to understanding the Māori world.  It lays the foundation of communicative skills and cultural knowledge to enable students to be bilingual and bicultural with an appreciation and consideration of a Māori worldview.

An integrated Te Reo Māori course is offered with a focus on the four main components of the language: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. The achievement objectives of this course are to successfully prepare students for the new Level 1 NCEA Achievement Standards.   There are two internal Achievement Standards which assess the student's speaking and writing skills.  There is also an external listening or reading comprehension assessment offered.

Entry Guidelines

The best preparation for this course is for learners to have a genuine interest in Māori language and culture. Ideally, students should have studied Māori at Year 9 and 10 with some success. At least a basic understanding of Māori language to Level 4 of the curriculum. The ability to stand and introduce yourself and other members of your family is an absolute necessity. There is a noho marae trip during the first term of the year also.
