Entry Guidelines

The Trades programme is for year 12 and 13 students who want to stay at school and start training for a real job. If you are accepted into the Trades Academy you will be able to stay at school completing NCEA while at the same time start to work towards a National Certificate in a trade of your choice. Some Trades Academy programmes offer both year 1 and 2 however all programmes are subject to numbers. This programme is limited to 28 spaces for Garin College learners.

Trades Academy offers practical and hands-on training and there are many options to choose from. Most programmes operate one full day a week at an NMIT campus. Others are residential and operate in block courses throughout the year.

Students need to be focused, able to self manage and full attendance is required. The programme is a full year commitment. Entry is by application and interview process including student, parents/caregivers and Trades Academy Coordinator and a minimum of Level 1 Literacy and Numeracy is required.

NB Trades enrolment is subject to availability of spaces in specific courses determined by course providers as well as the number of funded places available to the school. If capacity is reached  we will generate a wait list of applicants.  If we are advised of additional spaces becoming available, students on the wait list will be assessed for suitability on a case by case basis through an interview process and discussion with relevant Deans.  Whilst Students can select both Trades and Gateway, priority will be given to those students who have been unable to secure a place in the Trades academy.

Students attend NMIT or other Trades Academy providers one day per week in a chosen programme.

A timetabled class for Trades Academy allows additional study time.

Please Note: Students are responsible for their own catch-up on school subjects missed while attending the Trades Academy including internal assessments.

Approximately 16-22 credits, earned through NZQA Unit standards, are available in each chosen trade programme. See Trades Academy for learning outcome information. Students work towards a National Certificate in selected trade and gather NCEA Level 1, 2 and 3 credits.

All approvals for courses through this system are subject to satisfactory achievement in remaining internal standards and external examinations. Course Confirmation Day will run at the start of next year, where final approval for each course will be confirmed.
